A recent study on the effects of the take-up of informal care on working hours and workplace absentism that was conducted in the Netherlands shows clearly negative labour market consequences for female carers. Women have reduced their work hours after taking up intensive informal care on average for more than 8 hours per week. They were also more likely to experience a spell of long-term sickness absence when taking up informal care. The results underline the importance of appropriate labour market and healthcare policies that help to reconcile work and care. Read the full study here.
